Finding My Career in Public Education

I was one of those educators who felt “called” to teach in public schools. I can still remember the day I had a clear calling. One job I had before university studies was as an ice-cream truck driver. Yep, the kind that sells ice-cream bars while playing a jingle tune from the cab. It was a fantastic job. Everyone is happy to see you and wants to buy something from you.

I was selling in Seattle and drove by an elementary school. The entire playground was cement. I stopped my truck, turned off the tunes and engine, and starred at the school's playground. I could not imagine young children playing games entirely on cement.

It was during my pondering that I felt throughout my entire body that I needed to be a teacher. I was extremely fortunate to eventually teach junior high and senior high school students and be the principal of an elementary school. Then 20 years flew by, and my new M.S. life could no longer work the demanding job.

Find out next week how I learned to live with a devastating disease……
