Choosing to Suspend Judgment

I give a lot of credit to my parents modeling this behavior in my life. It comes from the practice of forbearance. It is a practice of forgiving a person prior to them offending or hurting you. It means refraining from the enforcement of something (as a debt, right, or obligation) that is due.

A practical, real-life example, is South African Nelson Mandela showing forbearance after his 27 years in prison. He refrained from bitterness and anger from the situation of Apartheid and segregation in his country. Many people could understand a response of violence. Anytime someone holds back anger, frustration, or retaliation, thatโ€™s forbearance in action. It is when a person focuses on a peaceful resolution, not the offense.
