I remember one night of skating when I was in the 6th grade. A friend and I went roller skating on the “teen night.” The roller-skating rink was about a 20-minute car ride from home.

I knew when we finished skating her older sister would be there to give us a ride home. Unbeknownst to me, her teen sister was driving the car with three other teens her age.

Like the bat, I was motionless. I felt scared and frozen at the same time. As a ten-year old child, I had no idea what I should do in this moment. I knew jumping out of the car going 70 miles an hour on the interstate would not be a promising idea.

So, as the teens passed the bottle from teen to teen, I sat motionless. I closed my eyes and talked to God. I asked him to get me home safely. I was scared and afraid. I vowed that I would never ever, ever be in a car with people drinking
