A Party for a Ten-year Old

….a continuing weekly story….

As Sue planned her child’s ten-year old birthday party, memories from Tacoma kept interrupting her thinking. Her memories jumped into her head at the most unexpected times. Standing in line at the grocery store, dropping her kids off at school or getting a pedicure, were all moments that she would be surprised with remembering her life growing up in Tacoma. She thought about Kim. She had not heard any news about her over the years.

She thought about the lie she had told to the police when she was ten. She still remembered how much she hated Jerry. She thought about her mother. She thought about all the illegal drugs Jerry had sold to her Mom. She thought about her mother's death, and she felt like her overdose on drugs was thanks to Jerry. The rest of Sue’s life living as a foster kid in Tacoma were terrible.

She remembered her friend Kim. She did not know what had ever happened to her. She wondered why she was having these memories. She concluded, that the memories must be because her son was turning ten and his life was completely different than hers at ten. It began to really annoy her when she would wake up during the night with Tacoma memories.
