Rest & Failure
I have some more distilling On Mental Toughness (see blog April 17 for details) for you on some of the ideas in it.
Many professional athletes and successful corporate achievers have learned that their body needs rest or breaks every 90 to 120 minutes. Their rest can be 15 minutes of a walk outside, deep breathing exercises, or time “out” on the bench.
I’ve never been a “professional athlete” nor a “corporate” achiever, but I’ve certainly been an “A” personality over the years. Rest and failure were two opportunities I had to learn repeatedly in order to achieve anything. Sometimes it was very painful learning.
I still order my days to include intentional rest. It’s a time for reflection and prayer. I’ve discovered that on my daily walks is a great time for me to reflect and have intentional prayer. I’ve made recordings of both and usually start my walk listening to the recordings. I usually start with praying, then reflecting and then finishing with intentional silence. I’ve been doing it now for over ten years.
If it’s raining outside, I’ll walk inside the Lowe’s store. I can get a mile done by walking the perimeter isles. How about you? People often think “that’s what I’ll do in retirement.” Yet in pre-retirement, the leading causes of death are heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries.
So, I recommend starting small. Be successful doing just a little bit. Then add a new little bit more and being successful with that. Next week, I’ll introduce you to the Krazen Way.
